Favorite Romantic Movies of All Time
1) Sense and Sensibility- This Jane Austen classic was translated for the movie screen by Emma Thompson and directed by Ang Lee. It tells the story of 2 sisters and their search for true love in a society where money determines who you can marry.
2) The English Patient- This was based on the Booker Prize-winning novel written by Michael Ondaatje. A man is found in the desert after a plane crash. He has lost all of his memory, but under the care of a nurse, he begins to tell the story of the love of his life. He was an archaeologist before the start of World War II and on one expedition he falls madly in love with the wife of one of his colleagues. They have an affair before the start of the Great War of the 20th century. Later on, they are torn apart not by the war, but by jealousy, passion and ultimately, death. It also examines the lives of other characters in the story who try to rebuild their lives after seeing so much madness and cruelty on the battlefields of Europe.
3) Moulin Rouge- This is the movie that you either really hate or really love. Baz Luhrman tells the tragic love story of Christian and Satine in bohemian Paris of the 19th century using modern pop songs.
4) Ever After- This is one of the many screen versions of the Cinderella story. It's my favorite though because it is the one I can most relate with. I like the idea that for once in the fairy tale the princess doesn't have to be saved and is considered an equal by the man of her dreams.
5) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- I've already written one entire post about this. Love is one of the most illogical feelings in the world. But when we do fall in love, we never really listen to our brain anyway. So the only thing we can do really is just see where it takes us. Hopefully we land on a soft cloud and live happily ever after. If it is our bad luck to end up in the middle of the storm, then we have no choice but to try to find our way out of
