The Life of the Bum

Ever since I got home, I haven't been doing much except go out to meet friends, watch my collection of art film DVD's and catch up on all the cable TV programs I've been missing for the last year. I already lost count how many DVD's I've finished viewing, but I can say all of them are pretty good. These are the titles that stand out though:

1) Sunset Boulevard- This Billy Wilder film tells the story of the strange relationship between an aging silent film star and a young writer drifting aimlessly. It's full of irony and dark comedy. The script is very smart and the cast is excellent.

2) Triplets of Belleville- This should have won the Oscar for Best Animated Film. It's a very simple and touching story about a grandmother who loses her only grandson after he is kidnapped by the French Mafia during the Tour De France. The visuals are excellent, the music is memorable and it shows how people can keep their integrity despite being placed in difficult circumstances.

3) Chungking Express- This is the first Wong Kar-Wai movie I have ever seen. After watching this film, I am a new fan.

Can't rememeber all of them yet at the moment. I'll put out a more comprehensive list once I've finished some more movies. I still have to catch up on the Akira Kurosawa DVDs I haven't seen.
